The biggest criticism of low budget tablets was that they do not offer the latest version of the Android OS. But that has changed with the HCL’s newly launched budgeted tablets running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as they maintain under Rs. 10,000 price barrier. This post covers specification and reviews for one of such low cost tablets – the HCL Me Tablet U1.

On first impressions, the device is quite well built, at par with the competition if not better. The rear panel however feels flimsy near the ports and you get the feeling that you can wrench it out. The device has a glossy white finish making it a fingerprint magnet. Today we have with us the Me Tablet U1, third foray of HCL into the low budget tablet segment and its first venture into the ICS Tablet domain. Does the device have what it takes to stand out of the crowd?

The front of the device has a 7-inch display that boasts of a resolution of 480x800. The front of the device has a 0.3MP camera that takes pictures in a maximum resolution of 640x480. Not only this, the front-facing camera also capable of shooting videos in 320x240 resolution but with low quality when compared not only to the competition but the predecessor, HCL Me Tab X1.

The device is powered by high-performance Cortex A8 1GHz processor with 512MB RAM and 4GB Flash memory expandable up to 32GB through external microSD card. The machine runs on latest Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwitch operating system.

The device has a mini USB port, a headphone jack, DC in and a full sized USB port. The addition of a full size USB port is nice as users can directly plug in their 3G dongles into the device. The device compromises on one SIM card slot and Bluetooth connectivity.

HCL Me Tablet X1 comes with a 4100mAH standard Li-Polymer battery which gives you 200 hours stand by backup and 6 hours talk time backup.

The gadget is available in the market in three beautiful colors, shadow black, classic brown and passion pink. On the top of the device are 3 small buttons. Two of these buttons are used to control the volume and one is the on/off/sleep/wake button. HCL has promoted its own Me Apps store so no latest apps of Google play store. The pre-installed file manager is easy to navigate and transferring contacts from your computer to the device.
